Windmills are a common sight throughout the Netherlands. Go to any town throughout Holland and no doubt you’ll easily find one. It’s something of a symbol for the country where flatness means wind has always been more prevalent.
Windmills served all types of functions. You would mostly find them by rivers because they were used to help drain water from bank to bank throughout the day. They also were used as paper mills, grain mills, saw mills, bread makers and just about every other common function of the time.
Today many have been converted in to modern homes that retain their original structure and act as something of a heritage symbol. Just take a look at some of these well kept windmills.
